These are the kinds of challenges faced by those affected by hearing loss.\u00a0<strong>The right listening and communication strategies can help improve the performance of your hearing aids.<\/strong>\u00a0Here are the strategies to favour and those to avoid to better understand those around you.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>For the hearing impaired<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First off,\u00a0<strong>let the person you are speaking with know that you have a hearing problem.<\/strong>\u00a0This will avoid many misunderstandings and will allow for the use of other strategies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"first\">Ask the person to specify the topic of the conversation.<\/li>\n<li>Position yourself near the person who is speaking, either facing him or her or on a slight angle.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you can see the person&#8217;s face.<\/li>\n<li>Stand with your back towards the window or the light and adjust the lighting as needed.<\/li>\n<li>Eliminate as much ambient noise as possible (e.g., turn off the television, dish washer, etc.).<\/li>\n<li class=\"last\">If you miss something, do not be afraid to ask the person to repeat using different words.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For friends and family<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The first step to engaging conversation with someone that is hard of hearing is to\u00a0<strong>get the person&#8217;s attention before starting to talk.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"first\">Tell them what you will be talking about.<\/li>\n<li>Choose a calm environment where there is less ambient noise.<\/li>\n<li>Position yourself about three\u00a0feet from the person and try to face him or her while you speak.<\/li>\n<li>Speak slowly and clearly.<\/li>\n<li>If the person does not understand something you say, try repeating using different words.<\/li>\n<li>Make sure the person understands what you are saying.<\/li>\n<li class=\"last\">Take turns speaking when you are in a group.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What to avoid<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Certain seemingly trivial behaviours can make communication difficult. It is important to be aware of these behaviours in order to avoid them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"first\">Hiding your lips or speaking with something in your mouth (gum, cigarette, etc.).<\/li>\n<li>Moving your head while speaking.<\/li>\n<li class=\"last\">Interrupting or changing topics abruptly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Essential support<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This learning curve requires the support of friends and family members.
